Application Process

Thinking about becoming an electrician? Joining an IBEW apprenticeship is an excellent way to being a career in the electrical trade.

  • STEP 1 : HOW DO I QUALIFY?

     

    Step 1 - How do I Qualify?

    • You can apply at the age of 17 and must be 18 to be indentured
    • High school graduate/GED/two-year Associate Degree or higher
    • Show successful completion of high school algebra or post high school algebra course with a passing grade
    • Provide an official transcript for high school and post high school education and training – GED records must be submitted. 

     

  • STEP 2: SELECT A PROGRAM

    • Inside Wireman
    • Outside Lineman
    • Technician (Sound & Communication)
    • Residential Wireman

     

    Not every apprenticeship offers all these programs. The outside lineman apprenticeship is only offered at training centers specifically tailored to that program.

  • STEP 3:  TAKE THE  IBEW APTITUDE TEST 

    Take IBEW Apprenticeship Aptitude Test

    The aptitude test consists of two parts –Algebra and Functions, and Reading Comprehension.

    The test takes approximately two and a half hours to complete, with a break between the two parts.

    You must score a minimum of 4 out of 9 to be eligible for the Oral Interview.

  • STEP 4: ORAL INTERVIEW

    Interview

    This is where you want to do your best and make a very high score! Applicants are ranked highest to lowest.

    Applicants who qualify for an oral interview will be notified of the interview date and time. Applicants will be interviewed by the PEJATC which consists of representatives from both the Southern Colorado Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 12. The committee will consider such attributes as:

    • Education
    • Ability/Skills
    • Work Experience
    • Reliability
    • Interest
    • Attitude
    • Judgment
    • Cooperation

  • STEP 5: RANKING & INDENTUREMENT

    Based on the interview, applicants will receive an overall ranking score. Applicants will then be ranked on a list according to this final score. As new positions become available in the apprenticeship program, names will be taken off the list in the order that their name appears on the list.

    Applicants names will remain on this list for one year. If you have not been selected within the one year period you may reapply at the end of the one year period. However, you may request to re-interview if you have gained at least 1,000 hours of work experience in the electrical construction industry, or successfully completed two or more post-secondary, trade related classes.

    Candidates with previous knowledge and skill acquisition in the electrical construction industry can ask for and have such work and job experience evaluated by the JATC prior to signing an Apprenticeship Agreement. Proper documentation will be required. The Committee’s decision will be final. After signing the apprenticeship agreement and being employed the apprentice cannot request an evaluation of past experience.

    The recruitment, selection, employment, and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship, shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex or age-except the applicant must be at least 17 years of age to apply and be 18 years of age to be indentured. The JATC does not, and will not, discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability because of the disability of such individual. The sponsor will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and will operate the apprenticeship program as required under applicable law and lawful regulations issued there under.

What do I need to bring with me for my application?
    • All applications are done online only, just click on the NEW APPLICANTS tab and follow the instructions.
    • Documents you need to upload are:
    • • Transcripts showing you’ve passed Algebra level math or higher
    • • A copy of your HS diploma or proof of GED
    • • Birth certificate or Passport
    • • Driver’s License
    • • Social Security Card
    • • If prior military – DD 214

 

Is a driver's license really necessary? Will a state ID work?

A driver's license is required for the Inside Wireman program. It can be an out of state driver's license at the time of application, but it must be a current and valid Colorado State driver's license at the time of indenture. If you are in the process of getting or renewing your license, you may provide the temporary paper document provided by the DMV at the time of application.

Can I apply online?

Yes, currently we do accept online applications. If you haven't already, please create an account on Tradeschool to begin the application process. Alternately, you may apply in person, by appointment only, at our office on one of our computers: PEJATC Training Facility located at 2924 Graneros, Pueblo, Colorado 81005.

What do I do if my transcript states something other than algebra?

The PEJATC will accept the following courses: Introductory Algebra (or any level of algebra higher than "pre-algebra"), Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Tech Math, Integrated Math, & Contemporary Math. If the course you took is not listed here, and the course involved algebra, you may submit a copy of thecourse catalog from the school that specifically references the course listed on your transcript. 

I didn’t graduate from high school and don’t have my GED, but I’m in college. Does that count?

If you have completed an Associate’s degree or higher, that will work. You may upload a copy of your diploma or an official college transcript clearly stating that you received your degree. Completion of only part of a college programis insufficient.
